Terry Thompson brings the Gospel to the Red Maple on Easter Sunday
Everybody who missed church should have came to hear Terry Thompson bless the decks from the dj pulpit on Easter Sunday. It doesn't take a genius to know that a night filled with spiritual music will enrich any night of dancing. But it does take someone with courage to do it. While it has probably happened somewhere before in Baltimore, Terry made it known before hand that this would be a Gospel and spiritual night of soulful House music. Like I said, I missed church(again) but I made up for it by praisin' his name at the Red Maple on Easter Sunday night. I got there before midnight and it started to get a little crowded in one of the lounge areas quick. Soon most people moved to the dance floor as Terry began his musical sermon through gospel/spiritual House music. He just cranked songs out one after another with lyrics like "All we need is a little bit of faith" and "I said I wanna' testify". Terry even threw down some Michael Watford and India. DJ JLee(Jason Lee) from blackbookscafe.com, bmorehouse.com, and the Soul Fiesta even jumped on the decks for a while. I wish more parties were like this. If you had asked me my opinion of the Red Maple about 4 months ago I would have said it was a den of beauginess(?). But it has quietly become a pretty cool place to dance, hang, and lounge for a lot of the old House crowd of Baltimore. As the club has booked more and more of the familiar soulful House dj's, more and more of the chic House heads have shown up to dance(Especially since you can wear jeans) . There is no drunken people on the dance floor and cigarette smokers have to go outside to the courtyard to smoke. Finally, if you have a chance to hear Terry play you will not be disappointed. Look out for a mix from Terry(soon) in our House mixes page that was recorded live from the Red Maple on another night. Listen for the version of "In my arms" by Una and tell me why in the hell that track was not a number one song. In the years of the House drought in Baltimore a lot of damn good dj's had very few places to play. But I can tell you that they all have come back with a vengeance and gettin' the respect they deserve. I'll go out on the limb again and say, in my opinion, Baltimore based House dj's are the best in the whole Mid-Atlantic region. Who can deny this list of dj's: In no particular order: DJ Spen, Terry Thompson, DJ Pope, DJ Karizma, Thommy Davis, Henry Da Man, JLee, DJ Oji, Teddy Douglass, DJ Biskit, Greg Pickett, Donnie Burlin, KW Griff, Geoffrey C, DJ Technics, etc. Half of these guys are also super producers of House music and the blackbookscafe.com gives them their props.
