No longer are the hybrid smartphones being developed "just around the corner."  They are developed in different forms by many wireless/mobile phone manufacturers.  Phones from Kyocera to Handspring to Microsoft to Nokia and Samsung are being carried by companies like Sprint PCS, T-Mobile, Verizon Wireless, etc.  These phones have merged the PDA with the Mobile phone.  With this combination you don't have to have two separate devices.  You also don't have to have additional equipment to connect your Palm or Pocket PC® to the internet or retrieve your email from Hotmail or AOL.  You also don't have to buy the "mobile pants" being advertised on the ridicules Dockers® commercial.  Let's take the the Kyocera 6035, for example.  We can testify firsthand of this phones usefulness as far as the Palm OS® is concerned.  You can get a contract from Sprint PCS or Verizon Wireless for a basic one year plan at whatever they are offering at the time and add different web services.  At the time of this writing Sprint PCS WEB service was only an additional $5.  So for a plan that's $34.99, you can just add the $5 and that's you monthly bill.  You can download free web clippings into your palm/phone by connecting through the MY PALM software that comes with this phone.  For instance there is one application called MOVIEFONE© that will give you a list of movie theaters in your area and all the movies that are playing (with the starting times).  You can also download games and programs with your pc.  This is the same process for Pocket PC based phones.  Other Palm OS® based phones include the Samsung SCH i300 which has a color display as opposed to the monochrome display.  Handspring now has the  "Treo"  to go with its line of Palm based PDA's.  This phone features a small keyboard that looks similar to the one on Two Way pagers.  I guess this is for owners who hate the idea of using a "stylus" to write data on the device.  Nokia has an incredible new device called the Communicator 9290.  On the color display, you can get a horizontal view of the the internet on your screen, in color.  You can also view more of your documents if displayed horizontally.  Nokia uses the little known and powerful Symbian OS.  The only problem we have with this phone is that Nokia's service for this phone is a little too pricey with some estimates at $69 month.  That doesn't include the price of the phone.  The cost of the phones can be pricey when they first hit the market but as new phones are introduced the price gets very inexpensive.  About a year ago the Kyocera 6035 was at least $400.  But now that Kyocera has developed a new smaller phone with a color display, the 6035 can now be obtained for $99 after rebates.  The prices of the smartphones leads us into the Microsoft based Pocket PC®.  The Pocket PC PDA by itself is a little costly by themselves and they range from $200-$600.  Microsoft is new to the smatphone market and is poised to try and gain market share on the Palm based PDA's and phones.  The Pocket PC phone is currently being offered through Sprint PCS, Verizon Wireless, and T-Mobile with many more to follow.  The price range is $500-$799 with T-mobile offering the cheapest at $549.  These phones are a little more expensive than the Palm based smartphones but they pack more for the punch.  They come out of the box with Microsoft's Media Player to listen to mp3 or WMA music files with you smartphone.  It also comes with Internet Explorer, Word, Excel, games, Microsoft Reader, MSN Messenger, etc.  It also comes with the Terminal Services application which allows IT professionals to connect to and manage their Microsoft servers.  You can purchase similar applications for the Palm OS but over time they will quickly add up to the same price a new Pocket PC.  Most if not all Pocket PC smartphones have a color display.  See our stories and testimonies on the usefulness of PDA's in everyday life.
