deejay/producer
Every now and then I come to meet a talent that I think the world should know about. I recently visited club Anzu in DC with the Inner Corner Band to hear deejay's Stevie G and Adrian. Stevie was playing as I entered. It wasn't crowded yet so I had a chance to pay attention to what he was playing. Then he met me at a recent bbc visit to the DC Sanctuary and gave me 4 mixed cd's of his work. DJ Karizma, Cleo Khary, just to name a few, are dj's who I have come to realize make a production of their mix cd's. They just don't mix up one song after another just to show people they are on top of all the newest music. I listened to Stevie G's cd's and was extremely impressed by the uniqueness of the mixes. They had a plethora of sounds and took me to many places. He definitely has his own style and take pride in his works, as do many dj's I suspect. Please listen to one of his mixes and read his bio to see what I was impressed with. I'll be featuring his mixes in a 4 part series. May I add that he is a pretty cool dude as well.

Bio
Steve Gamboa (a.k.a. Stevie G) has been involved with dee jaying, producing, and
performing live music for over 15 years. He began as a DJ in 1988, spinning
hip-hop, rare groove, and funk at various parties in his hometown of Washington,
DC. Soon after, he became the bass player for the seminal underground punk
group, The Nation of Ulysses, and afterwards, the drummer for The MaKe uP,
which released several full length LPs and went on to tour the US, Europe,
Japan, and Brazil.
In 1995, Stevie became co-founder and resident at the "Cold Rice" weekly party
at the Kaffa House in DC. He spun there once a week playing an eclectic mix of
rare groove, funk, house, and drum and bass. He was also resident at this same
venue on Fridays under the name, Killa F.M. (Killa From Manila), where he was
the opening dub/roots and culture DJ for The Upsetter International dancehall
sound system.
Currently, Stevie has been concentrating on his career as a soulful house and
classics DJ, as well as a producer. His unique combination of organic styles,
ranging from deep to rhythmcentric, also includes a wide range of underground
disco/left-field classics and their related genres. In October 2000, he began
as solo resident for his own party called, "Sunday Shoutin,'" at the popular DC
nightspot Andalu. Guests at his party included Antonio Ocasio (Tribal Winds,
NY); Boo Williams (Diaspora); Anderson Soares (Sao Paulo, Brasil); Phil Asher
(Restless Soul, UK); Miguel Migs, Rasoul, and Lisa Shaw (Naked Music).
Stevie has also been the main resident at The House of Secrets for over 4 years
now.
This invitation-only weekly party is probably THE longest running house party in
the world. Located in a mansion near Howard University, this party has been in
effect for over 30 years. He once played a private party for Prince at Secrets,
where The Artist holds his after-show gatherings whenever in DC.
Locally, he is also Summer resident at M3 Music's Sunday twilight party, "Sunset
Soiree Sessions" on the roof top of Club 5 playing a mix of reggae, classics,
and world music. Stevie has also opened for the Afro-Beat musician, Femi Kuti,
when he performed in DC for his "Shoki Shoki" Tour and has supported local house
music DJs, Doug Smith (95 North Records) and Pope and Oji (Poji Records) at The
Sanctuary, another underground weekly house party.
Outside of the area, Stevie has played with Matthias "Matty" Heilbronn (Wave),
Neil Aline (Chez), and Darshan Jesrani (Metro Area) at APT, and with Adam
Goldstone (Nuphonic) at 59 Canal St. in New York. In October 2001, he played
gigs in San Francisco and LA as part of the Umoja team of DJs (with other
members in LA, San Francisco and Dallas). He also toured Brasil in October
2000, playing in Sao Paulo, Brasilia, Londrina, and Curritiba.
During 2001 and 2002, Stevie completed two separate and very successful tours of
Spain where he spun in clubs and bars in Barcelona, Tolosa, Zaragoza, Pamplona,
Madrid, Bilbao, Valladolid, Gijon, and Logrono. He also performed at two large
music festivals in Mallorca and Jerez de la Frontera where guests included
Thievery Corporation (ESL Records) and Jose Padilla (Cafe Del Mar). During the
annual Winter Music Conference in Miami 2002, he was a guest DJ at the Yellow
(Paris) / Vinylicious (DC) party ("Just For Friends").
Most recently, Stevie completed his second annual two-month co-residency as "The
Sunset DJ" (from 4 - 7 pm daily) at Ku De Ta (www.kudeta.net) in Bali, Indonesia
and is scheduled to return for the Summer 2004 season (July/August). During
this tour, he also spun at Fidel's in the Malate district of his birth city,
Manila, Philippines.
He also just recently completed his first house remix ("Givin' Up") performed by
local neo-soul performer, Deborah Bond. The remix, which also features his live
percussion on an A.S.E. (of Odara Productions) remix on the B side, has garnered
praise from many and is currently out now on Sahara Records (No. 6). A
percussion edit of the A.S.E. track is also featured on Sahara No. 7 that was
released in December 2003.
Beyond dee jaying, he is also a contributing writer and record reviewer for
XLR8R music and culture magazine. An interview he conducted with Masters At
Work was featured in the July 2002 issue and a full page on his Bali
re-experience appears in the current December 2003 issue. He is currrently
working on a Baltimore house music article to appear in the June 2004
issue.
