(Hugh Harrell, IV)

Are you from Baltimore? If not, how did you come to settle here?
Born in NYC(BKNY), raised in Baltimore.

What was your musical influences growing up?
Stevie Wonder, Earth Wind and Fire, Deodato, Nina Simone, Return to Forever, Donald Byrd, Kraftwerk and Afrika Bambaataa. Most of these were on my Mom’s turntable @ home all the time, except Kraftwerk ;-)

Tell us a little about yourself. (Your dj history, experiences, etc.)
I am not what you would call a traditional DJ. I was actually given the “DJ” moniker by DJ Oji and I appreciate all his influence. I was more interested in music production.

What made you want to get into House music?
I was always a “househead” from back in the day (the 80’s were great…real hip hop, real house music was played at a DISCO, and new wave music in the mix!) I have produced drum and bass, neo-soul, acid jazz, and commercial tracks and I will always return to my roots!

Some dj’s/producers have a mentor dj that they learn from while they hone their skills. Did you have one or someone that you looked to for inspiration?DJ Oji was the main person to turn me on. He and I hooked up after I got the nerve to let him hear what I was doing. He and I have since collaborated on many projects. DJ Pope is also an inspiration due to his production experience. The “Underground Experience” radio show should have never ended!

Do you consider yourself more of a producer than a dj?
Yes and also an engineer for the technical stuff(ask Oji)

Do you already have a name for a production company?
BBP…Brown Boy Productions

How did you get into producing and what projects will you hope to start in the near future?
Oji had me remix a song of his a couple of years ago and I was working on some commercial tracks for a marketing package at the same time. I felt this is what I exactly what I wanted to continue!

Were you a fan of DJ Oji & Pope’s “Underground Experience”? Tell us what the show meant to you as a budding producer/dj?
Yes! I am still waiting on getting on a major house label so that I expand my vision. I am happy to do what I can to help “the family” and I hope it will pay off in the future.

Where have you played and have you been featured on any radio/internet mix shows?
I have had tracks played on “Underground Experience” radio show, the “Audio Infusion” radio show(which is still on WEAA) a couple of internet radio stations, and my commercial music has been incorporated at the Pinnacle Golf web site, UndeArmour website, and numerous others.

We all had such a nice time at this year’s WMC in Miami and the energy was incredible. How do you think we can bring that vibe to Baltimore?
I think this past year was a good year for our region. Two years ago, I didn’t know who was from our area(even though I knew Pope and Oji) but this year I hooked up with everybody and it seems that there is a lot of creativity to be tapped here to make a big influence on what’s coming out in the near future!

What was one of your most memorable moments in a club, either being a dj or party goer?
I have had many and I feel all the parties that I attend @ the WMC do it for me.

What should we be expecting from you in the near future, as far as dj’ing, producing, or a website is concerned?
I hope to have an updated website up real soon with my stuff to access. I am currently working on a neo-soul groove with Sheila Ford and DJ Pope that debuted well @ Club 5 a couple of months ago. We hope to have that all finished in the near future. I am currently working on producing tracks that should take us to another level!
